Kalamazoo, MI- Scoring a goal in overtime as fast as the Millennium Falcon, the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Fort Wayne Komets 2-1 Saturday evening during Star Wars Night at Wings Stadium.
After a scoreless first period, Fort Wayne broke the gridlock with a goal from Jeremy Gates (1st) 12:35 into the second period.
A scary moment for the Komets occurred with less than a minute in the period, goaltender Ben Meisner was injured playing the puck behind his net. Meisner was replaced by Max Strang. Meisner left the game with 27 saves, while Strand recorded nine saves in the overtime defeat.
Fort Wayne outshot Kalamazoo 23-15 in the second period. The 23 shots allowed by the K-Wings were the most allowed this season in a single-period by Kalamazoo.
Former Komet, Matt Firman (1st) recorded the equalized 14:37 into the third period to force overtime with a slap shot from the left circle.
Kalamazoo capped off the come-from-behind victory with a goal from Justin Taylor (5th), who finished off an odd-man rush by deflecting a Matt Caria cross-rink pass 25 seconds into overtime. The assist from Caria extended his point streak to four games.
Jordan Binnington was stellar between the pipes turning aside 39 shots to record the victory.
Both Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne extended streaks. For the K-Wings, their win pushed their unbeaten streak in regulation at home to five games (4-0-1-0), while the Komets extended their overall unbeaten streak in regulation to six games (3-0-3-0).
Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne will meet again tomorrow, Sunday, January 12th for a 5:05 p.m. encounter at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
