Sova’s overtime heroics lifts K-Wings past Cyclones

Kalamazoo defeats Cincinnati 4-3 in overtime
April 9, 2014 - Mike Modugno
Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

Cincinnati, OH – Giving themselves some breathing room in the hunt for the North Division title, the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-3 Wednesday night at the US Bank Arena.

There weren’t many shots in the first period, but that didn’t stop the K-Wings from getting on the board. Former Cyclone, David Pacan (13th) scored from the left circle on a backdoor pass from Yannick Veilleux midway in the period to put the K-Wings ahead. Kalamazoo was outshot 6-4 in the opening 20 minutes.

Kalamazoo extended their lead early in the second period with a power-play marker from Chris Lawrence (15th). Playing in just his second game in the past two months, Eric Kattelus dished out the primary assist, while Matt Caria, who was named earlier in the day to the ECHL All-Rookie team, recorded the secondary assist.

Cincinnati grabbed some momentum late in the stanza with a rebound marker from Byron Froese (11th) with 12.6 seconds remaining.

Keeping the pendulum swinging in their favor, Zach Budish (3rd) evened the game at 2-2 just 17 seconds into the third period.

Josh Shalla (12th) gave the Cyclones the lead 8:45 into the period with a power-play strike.

Responding less than two minutes later, Sam Ftorek earned his 10th power-play goal and his 13th overall to force overtime.

Ftorek capped off the three-point night in the extra session by finding Joe Sova (6th) in the slot for the game-winner.

The victory was the seventh in overtime this season for Kalamazoo.

Kalamazoo’s magic number to secure the North Division crown is now at three points with the victory.  The K-Wings lead the Cyclones by three points in the division.
