Kalamazoo, MI – Making 27 saves, Joel Martin reestablished the Kalamazoo Wings record for shutouts earning his 14th in a K-Wings uniform with a 6-0 victory Friday night over the South Carolina Stingrays.
Setting the tone early and often in the first period, Kalamazoo set a new standard of goal scoring by netting a season-high four goal in a period
K-Wings forward Matt Firman (4th) started the onslaught 5:03 into the period wristing a shot past the Stingrays goaltender. Firman, has recorded goals in back-to-back games and has now registered points in three straight games.
Less than two minutes later, Matt Caria kept making his case for ECHL Rookie of the Year by snipping his rookie leading 20th goal of the season.
The scoring frenzy continued midway in the period but this time on a man advantage. Going backdoor on a pass, Jeremie Blain found Justin Taylor a wide open for his 14th goal of the season.
The K-Wings power-play unit struck again moments later with a goal from Ryan Del Monte (6th). Del Monte found a ricochet off the back wall from an Elgin Reid slap shot to close out the scoring in the first stanza.
The K-Wings upped their lead to 5-0 late in the second period with Firman’s second goal of the night late in the period by dangling past the Stingray’s defense and single handedly scored his fifth goal this season.
Tacking on a final tally in the third period was Dustin Cloutier (4th), who netted a one-timer from the blue line early in the stanza.
