MARTIN GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK

Goaltender Joel Martin has been Selected ECHL Goaltender of the Week
January 8, 2013 - Mike Modugno
Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL, three-time defending North Division Champions and National Hockey League affiliate to the Vancouver Canucks, and American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves  announce goaltender Joel Martin has been selected as the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for December 31st-January 6th.

Seeing action in all four games last week, Martin went 3-1-0-0 between the pipes for the K-Wings.

Marin was stellar stopping 80 of the 87 shots he faced and finished the week with a goal-against-average of 1.97 and a save percentage of 0.920.

This is the first-time this season as well as in his career that Martin has captured the ECHL’s top goaltending weekly honor.

The native of Fort Worth, Texas started the week with a 30 save performance in a 3-2 on New Year’s Eve against the division leading, Cincinnati Cyclones. Following a 2-0 defeat to the Toledo last Friday, in which Martin made 23 saves, the netminder turned a sided 27 shots in a decisive 7-3 win over the Evansville IceMen. Capping off the week, Martin stopped 31 shots and all five shootout attempts in the K-Wings 2-1 victory over the Walleye on Sunday.

Martin has appeared in a league-high 29 games this season posting a record of 13-13-2-1 with one shutout, a 2.65 goals-against average and a save percentage of .917. He has started 18 consecutive games for the K-Wings dating back to November 23rd.

Martin has appeared in 118 career ECHL games with an overall record of 56-49-9 with three shutouts, a 3.07 goals-against average and a save percentage of 0.901.

With Martin capturing the weekly honor, the accomplishment marks the fourth-time since joining the ECHL (2009-10) that the K-Wings have had a goaltender claim the award. All three other occasions were received by Ryan Nie, the last occurring in the 2010-11 season.

Martin and the K-Wings will return to Wings Stadium this Wednesday, January 9th with a 7 p.m. face-off versus the Reading Royals.

Wednesday night will be WRKR Holiday Hangover and $5 Pack the House Night. For an additional $10, fans can turn their tickets to all-you-can seats. Wings Stadium will have a delicious buffet featuring hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, Sloppy Joes, K-Wings boneless wings, French Fries, random desserts and refreshing Pepsi products.

Single-game tickets for the 2012-2013 season are on sale at the Wings Stadium Ticket Office. Ticket Office hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday’s.  To charge tickets by phone, please call Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000.
