Komets outlast K-Wings

Kalamazoo falls 4-3 in a shootout to Fort Wayne
March 22, 2014 - Mike Modugno
Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

Fort Wayne, IN – For the third straight game between the Kalamazoo Wings and the Fort Wayne Komets the final score would be 4-3; however, unlike the previous two encounters, it was the Komets that would skate away with the shootout victory.

Putting the K-Wings ahead 7:34 into the contest was Joe Sova (4th). Skating free at the left point, Sova rifled a slap shot over the shoulder of Matt Grogan.

Fort Wayne responded seven minutes later, when Scott Fleming deflected a Simon Danis-Pepin slap shot for his 14th goal of the season.

Battling behind the Komets net, the K-Wings regained the lead with just less than two minutes remaining in the period when Nick Sirota found Chris Lawrence in front of the net for a power-play tally. The assist extended Sirota’s point streak to five games.

With 48 seconds remaining in the period, Fort Wayne would pull even with a Kenton Miller (5th) right-circle slap shot.

After a scoreless second period, the game remained tied heading into the third period. Former Komet Matt Firman (7th) put the K-Wings back ahead with a wrap-around marker midway in the period. Assisting on the goal was Zach Pochiro, who earned his first pro point in his first pro game.

Keeping with the trend of the game, the Komets answered minutes later with a marker from Jordan Southorn (12th) to force overtime.

Finally decided in a shootout, the Komets outlasted the K-Wings in a six-man exchange with William Lacasse earning the lone goal in the extra session.
