K-Wings win streak soars to seven

Kalamazoo defeats Toledo 6-4
March 15, 2014 - Mike Modugno
Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

Toledo, OH – Tying their season-high for goals in a single game, the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Toledo Walleye 6-4 Saturday night at the Huntington Center. The win increased the K-Wings winning streak to seven games, which ties their ECHL record for longest winning streak set during the 2009-2010 season.

Wasting little time, Chris Lawrence put the K-Wings ahead netting his 10th goal of season just 20 seconds into the game. The goal by Lawrence was the quickest this season to start a game for Kalamazoo. Lawrence, who extended his point streak to seven games, is the ninth Kalamazoo player this season to score 10 or more goals.

Seconds after their power-play concluded, the K-Wings pushed their lead to two goals with a tally from Yannick Veilleux (15th) 12:20 into the stanza.

Keeping up the pressure, Jeremie Blain knocked in a Ludwig Blomstrand rebound for his third goal of the season 2:10 into the second period. Blain was the K-Wings top performer notching four points (1 goal, 3 assists) and went plus-5.

Needing just four seconds of power-play time to get on the scoreboard, Joe Gleason (3rd) scored off the face-off to cut the K-Wings lead to 3-1.

Earning another K-Wings record, Joel Martin made his ninth save of game early in the second period to surpass Ryan Nie (2009-11) and became the team’s ECHL all-time leader in saves (2,808). Martin, who finished the game with 33 saves, ran his unbeaten streak to 12 games (10-0-1-1) with the victory.

Justin Taylor (17th) increased his point streak to five games midway in the stanza scoring on a backhander to reclaim a three-goal advantage for the K-Wings.

Using another power-play to battle back, David Gilbert (3rd) deflected a Gleason slap shot to bring the Walleye back to within two goals late in the middle frame.

Starting the third period with two goals in a span of two minutes Kalamazoo built their lead to four goals. Matt Caria notched his team-best and ECHL rookie-leading 22nd goal of the season 4:25 into the period.

Finding the loose puck in the crease, Lawrence (11th) tacked on to his second goal of the night to close out the scoring the K-Wings.

Toledo made a late run midway in the period with goals from Richard Nedomiel (8th) and Ken Peroff (1st).
