K-Wings move into a share of first place in the Eastern Conference

Kalamazoo defeats Fort Wayne 4-3
March 9, 2014 - Mike Modugno
Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

Kalamazoo, MI – The hot streak of the Kalamazoo Wings continued Sunday afternoon, as the K-Wings won their season-high fifth straight contest with a 4-3 victory over the Fort Wayne Komets.  The win also increased their home unbeaten streak to 11 games (10-0-1-0) and put them in a tie with the South Carolina Stingrays for first place in the Eastern Conference.

The K-Wings power-play against the Komets continued to roll this weekend at Wings Stadium. On the one-man advantage, Chris Lawrence found streaking Sam Ftorek (12th) for his league-best eight power-play goal for a defenseman. The assist by Lawrence increased his point streak to five games.

Celebrating his 21st birthday with a blast, Ludwig Blomstrand (10th) snuck into the slot 16:15 into the period and buried a howitzer over the shoulder of Andrey Makarov.

Cutting the lead in half quickly in the second period, Chris Auger netted his 26th goal of the year 50 seconds into the period to bring the Komets back to within a single goal.

Kalamazoo increased the lead back to two goals midway in the stanza when Matt Firman (6th) scored on a rebound to extend his point streak to five games.

Battling back in the third period Fort Wayne answered with a pair of goals 20 seconds apart. Just four seconds into a power-play Jordan Southorn registered his 11th goal of the campaign.

Seconds later Brandon Marino (22nd) tied the game at 3-3 with a breakaway marker. The back-to-back goals tied a K-Wings’ season-high for quickest allows surrendered.

Regaining momentum 3:11 into the period, Jeremie Blain put the K-Wings in front for good with a power-play strike that was setup on a screen by Yannick Veilleux.

The Komets best scoring chance down the stretch came with 4:12 left in the game when Chris Auger was denied on a penalty shot.

Joel Martin made 25 saves to increase his record to 16-7-1-3. In his last 10 games, Martin has been stellar earning a record of 8-0-1-1.

Special teams played a pivotal role. Kalamazoo went 2-for-4 on the power-play, while Fort Wayne was 1-for-6.
