Kalamazoo Defeats Gwinnett 4-3 in a Shootout
January 13, 2013 - Mike Modugno
Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

Gwinnett, GA – Earning a split of their two games with the Gwinnett Gladiators (25-12-1-1), the Kalamazoo Wings (16-18-2-1) outlasted the Gladiators 4-3 in a shootout Sunday night at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Racing the puck out of their zone, Doug Jones worked his way around the K-Wings defense and launched a blistering slap shot for his team-best 15th goal of the season 4:20 into the first period.

Prior to Sunday night, scoring first was a good omen for the Gladiators, as Gwinnett was 22-1-1-0 when registering the game’s first goal.

A great individual effort helped the K-Wings even the game at 1-1 midway in the period, as John Armstrong was able to tightrope walk the blue line on his way to sneaking into the high slot for his fifth goal of the season.

A turnover to start a power-play cost the K-Wings late in the opening period, when Andy Brandt (7th) capped off an odd-man rush with a shorthanded marker to regain a single goal advantage for the Gladiators.

Battling back early in the second period, Nick Sirota (9th) recorded the equalizer for Kalamazoo, 3:34 into the stanza, with a one-timer created by a centering pass from Armstrong.

Sirota (10th) gave the K-Wings their first lead of the night 7:49 into the third period with an assist from Alexandre Grenier and Armstrong. Grenier, a third round NHL draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks, has earned points in all three games he has played with the K-Wings.

Using last minute heroics, Rylan Galiardi (11th) forced overtime with a power-play tally with 5.6 seconds remaining in regulation.

Settling matters in a marathon nine-man shootout, the K-Wings out-dueled the Gladiators 2-1 in the extra session with goals from Armstrong and the eventual game-winner from Sam Ftorek.

Joel Martin (14-15-2-1), who made 34 saves in regulation and overtime, stopped eight of nine shots he faced in the shootout. In six shootout appearances (5-1), Martin has stopped a league-best 30 of the 33 attempts (90.9%) he has faced.
