CYCLONES COMEBACK TO DEFEAT K-WINGS

Cincinnati Defeats Kalamazoo 4-3 in a Shootout
December 7, 2012 - Mike Modugno
Director of Public Relations and Broadcaster

Cincinnati, OH- Erasing a two-goal third period deficit, the Cincinnati Cyclones (14-5-2-0) increased their North Division lead to three points with a come-from-behind 4-3 shootout victory Friday night at the U.S. Bank Arena against the Kalamazoo Wings (9-10-1-1).

Being outshot 18-5 in the opening period didn’t seem to bother the K-Wings, as Kalamazoo was able to stay even with Cincinnati through 20 minutes of action.

After a K-Wings turnover at their own blue line, John McFarland (4th) raced the puck over two zones and capped off a two-on-one odd man rush with a wrister 5:36 remaining in the first period to grab the Cyclones an early advantage.

Eric Kattelus (7th) evened the game at 1-1 two and a half minutes later scoring the equalizer on a one-timer from between the circles that was setup from a tape-to-tape feed from Nick Sirota.

Turning the tables on the Cyclones in the second, the K-Wings outshot Cincinnati 14-4 in the stanza. Skating in the left circle, Kattelus continued his scoring prowess by putting the K-Wings ahead 2-1 midway in the period with his second goal of the night.

Extending their lead with just 7.2 seconds remaining in the period, Adam Polasek not only screened Cyclones goaltender Brian Foster, the defenseman, who was skating across the slot, deflected a Dustin Cloutier slap shot for his third goal of the season.

Cutting the K-Wings lead to a single-goal early in the third period, Josh Birkholz (2nd) scored shorthanded on a breakaway.

Deflecting an equalizer with 2:15 remaining in regulation, McFarland (5th) notched his second goal of the night to force overtime.

Heading goals from McFarland and Birkholtz, the Cyclones outlasted the K-Wings 2-1 in the seven-man shootout. Trailing 1-0 in the shootout, Kalamazoo forced the extra shootouts, when Kory Karlander recorded the K-Wings lone extra session marker on the team’s fifth attempt.
